Unlocking the Economic Potential of Rooftop Solar PV in India

  • Rooftop photovoltaic (RTS) sector plays an important role in meeting India’s renewable energy targets for 2022 and beyond. But the residential, commercial and industrial applications have been slow.
  • The target set by the Government of India, in 2015, for rooftop solar PV (RTS) is 40 GW. The installed capacity as on 31st December 2020 was approximately 6 GW.
  • A report was drafted jointly by the Council of Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) of India based on the insights of the participants of the ‘Unlocking the Economic Potential of Rooftop Solar Energy in India’ workshop that was organised by the International Energy Agency (IEA).
  • The recommendations in the report are set to benefit DISCOMs and RTS owners. For consumers, the focus would be on facilitating policy implementation and affordability through financing to encourage interest.
  • The report lays down guidelines for a roadmap for the possible ways in which the regulatory and market environment would change in India that would support the RTS sector over the medium as well as the long terms, to achieve renewable energy and climate targets.
