Representatives of 175 nations met at the UNESCO headquarters in France with the aim of making progress towards reaching a historic agreement covering the entire plastics life cycle. The stakes are immense, given that annual plastics production has more than doubled in 20 years to 460 million tonnes. Also, plastic production is on track to triple within four decades.
The aim of these negotiations include:
- Moving towards a historic agreement covering the entire plastics life cycle
- Banning single-use plastic items
- Taxing new plastic production
