An intense and prolonged heatwave has affected the Italian cities of Rome, Florence and Bologna. Temperatures have approached record-breaking levels in countries across southern Europe. In Spain, the national meteorological service has said that temperatures could exceed 42 to 44 degrees Celsius in some areas over the coming days.
Researchers believe that the persistent heatwave conditions were due to:
- The African anticyclone that continues to dominate the weather scenario
- Global heating that was strongly increasing the odds of heatwaves
- The ever-increasing greenhouse gas emissions
