The debate is growing over how environmentally friendly electric vehicles (EV) truly are, given the carbon emissions generated during their production and in power grids used to charge their batteries. A sizeable chunk of EV batteries are produced in coal-heavy China, which dominates the entire downstream EV battery supply chain.
The reasons why EV supply chains are in urgent need for decarbonization include:
- The extra time taken by EV motors to repay their carbon debt relative to an ICE car
- The need for EV and battery supply chains to adopt renewable energy
- The need to improve technology to reduce consumption and increase the recycling rate of mineral resources to decrease reliance on primary raw materials
