Sultan Ahmed al Jaber, the president of the COP28 Climate Summit, promised a “COP of action” in his opening speech, calling for a tripling of clean energy production by 2030 and a doubling of low-carbon hydrogen capacity by the same year. Al Jaber, a minister in the UAE government and the head of the government-owned Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc), said at the Atlantic Council’s Global Energy Forum that the world was “far off track” in terms of achieving its climate targets.
Al Jaber’s call to action aims to:
- Increase the annual installations of solar and wind by 2030
- Decrease fossil fuel production
- Meet the country’s net zero emission goal by 2050
