Efforts by global fashion brands to make denim clothing more sustainable have made some progress, but the ultimate goal of full circularity is yet to be achieved. The fashion industry is responsible for up to 8 per cent of global carbon dioxide emissions. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, carbon dioxide is one of the main contributors to global warming.
Several fashion brands in the US and Europe are studying the feasibility of implementing certain steps to improve sustainability in fashion, including:
- The collecting, reusing and repurposing of fabric and garment waste to reduce carbon emissions
- Reducing water usage
- Exploring the options for local recycling and export of waste for processing
