According to new research by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), China, which is home to the world’s largest buildings construction industry chains, has the potential to make a significant contribution in decarbonising the sector over the next decade. China will need to spend $1.33 trillion on cutting construction-related carbon dioxide emissions. This target will help the world achieve global climate ambitions of net-zero emissions by 2050.
The challenges China faces while aligning its construction industry to global climate goals are:
- China is responsible for 40 per cent of the 15 billion tonnes of global construction value chain carbon-dioxide emissions in 2022
- Global climate goals would most probably not be met without a reduction in emissions from the construction and operation of buildings
