A partnership has been signed by chemical tycoon BASF and shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industry (SHI) to investigate the viability of deploying carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology on board ships. In accordance with a Memorandum of Understanding, which was signed late last week at the trade event Gastech 2022 in Milan, the parties will examine whether a BASF-developed technology can be used to absorb carbon dioxide produced by ships.
According to the contract:
- BASF will offer knowledge and supply on floating liquefied natural gas technology.
- SHI will assess whether the shipping industry can use gas treatment technologies.
