China’s largest onshore wind-power facility has begun full-capacity operations in the northern Inner Mongolia autonomous region. The project’s operator is the state-owned China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGNPC). The project is the first in a batch of renewable energy projects targeted for the desert region, and its construction started in 2020. China is the world’s largest wind power producer and is also the world’s leading wind turbine manufacturing base. Growth in China, the US, and Europe will drive global onshore wind development.
The salient features of the Chinese project include:
- 701 turbines that have a capacity of 3 gigawatts (GW)
- These turbines can generate more than 10 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year
- The electricity generated will cut standard coal consumption by about 2.96 million metric tonnes
