June temperatures have broken the 174-year records kept by the U.S. federal agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The increase in the intensity of extreme weather events has been attributed to global warming, which causes a hotter and wetter atmosphere. The arrival of the El Niño weather pattern has pushed temperatures higher worldwide, further compounding increases in temperature brought on by greenhouse gas emissions.
Some of the effects that global warming is causing in various parts of the world include:
- A record-breaking wildfire season in Canada
- The decrease in the level of sea ice to an all-time low
- Catastrophic flooding in the U.S. state of Vermont
