The transportation sector accounts for 30% of the total emissions of Green House Gases (GHGs). The decline in the emissions from this sector is not as significant as that from other sectors. EU’s low-emission mobility strategy, which was adopted in 2016 aims to achieve this sole purpose and keep up with the increased demand for mobility of goods and people. The following subsections list the EU’s approach for different transportation sectors.
Reducing the emissions from the shipping sector:
- The EU is trying to put together a comprehensive data collection plan to tackle the emissions caused by the shipping sector.
- The shipping sector is a major source of greenhouse gases.
- The EU shipping sector accounts for producing 13% of the total greenhouse gas emissions.
Reducing emissions from the aviation sector:
- The EU is trying to develop a plan to tackle the emissions of GHGs from the aviation sector internally as well as with the help of the international community.
- This is a major step in achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and reducing the emissions by 55% by 2030.
- The aviation sector accounts for producing 13.9% of the total greenhouse gas emissions.
Reducing emissions through road transportation:
- Road transportation accounts for 21% of the total greenhouse gas emissions.
- It is the need of the hour to implement policies to reduce the emissions to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Reducing emissions through Fuel Quality:
- The EU is making it mandatory to sell clean fuel to reduce GHGs and protect human health.
- Keeping a check on fuel quality will reduce emissions by up to 6%.
